Did you know? 22-28 September is Recycling Week and we’re encouraging residents and colleagues of Southern Housing to find your rubbish a new home.
If you’re feeling confused about what you can and can’t recycle – you’re not alone. In fact, one of the biggest barriers to people recycling across the UK is uncertainty of what can be recycled.
On 9% of people feel very confident in their recycling knowledge, with a huge 39% of people saying they feel unsure about what can be recycled.
As a result, 50% of us across the UK incorrectly dispose of five or more items in our waste, reducing the effectiveness of our recycling efforts.
We want to change that.
Despite challenges, recycling remains one of the most impactful actions individuals can take for the environment. Every year, recycling in the UK saves 18 million tonnes of CO2 - equivalent to the emissions from nearly 1 million return flights from London to Sydney!
Recycling Week
Recycling Week, the UKs biggest annual celebration of recycling, returns from September 22 to 28. This year’s theme is ‘Small Changes, Big Impact”, encouraging everyone to take simple steps to make a significant difference.
How can I help?
Here are three easy ways to boost your recycling efforts:
- Check local recycling guidelines to ensure you’re sorting waste correctly.
- Avoid contaminating bins with non-recyclables or bulky items.
- Encourage others in your community to recycle properly.
Remember, your recycling can include commonly forgotten items such as: plastic toiletry bottles, aerosol cans, tin cans from food and drinks, cardboard toilet roll tubes and glass jars
Food for thought
Did you know? 910,000 tonnes of food goes to waste from London households every year. So…
1. Why not swap some fresh fruit for frozen or canned – they are high in nutrients, convenient, and last ages.
2. Recycle your banana peels: half a recycled banana peel could generate enough electricity to charge your smartphone!
3. Recycle your teabags: Recycling just 6 teabags creates enough energy to boil the kettle to make another cup. 35 recycled teabags would power a TV for a whole hour!
Happy Recycling!
