Southern Housing has completed a new development of 95 high-quality apartments at Alton Road in Roehampton, with the first residents settling into their new homes.
The site, formerly home to Pocklington Court, has been redeveloped, helping to meet a range of housing and care needs in the borough. The extra care scheme features 41 apartments, while the 54 shared ownership homes offer an affordable route for local people to get onto the property ladder.
Designed to a high standard of sustainability with a focus on community, every flat has a private terrace or balcony. There are separate communal gardens for each block, with the extra care residents also having access to a roof garden, designed to boost biodiversity.
Throughout the build, Southern Housing worked closely with Wandsworth Council and their occupational therapists, placing residents’ needs at the heart of the development. Playing a key role in shaping the extra care homes, their input helped ensure the design reflects real lived experience, going beyond minimum standards to create homes that feel welcoming.
This approach aligns with the principles set out in the latest Habinteg design guide, which go beyond compliance and promote inclusive, accessible homes for wheelchair users. The scheme showcases how thoughtful design can improve everyday life.
This development is a great example of inclusive, person-centred design brought to life in a practical and thoughtful way. I’m delighted to see residents moving in and the start of a vibrant new community.
Like many developments, the journey to completion had its challenges, but we stayed focussed on delivering these much-needed homes. We’re grateful to residents for their patience and for staying with us, and it’s brilliant to see them now settling into these homes.
Alton Road completes in the same year Southern Housing celebrates 125 years of providing homes for people in housing need.
