This landmark initiative, co-developed by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), the National Housing Federation (NHF), the Local Government Association, and sector leaders, sets out 22 commitments to remove unsafe cladding and improve resident safety across the country.
Why this matters
The plan is a direct response to the sector’s call for faster, fairer remediation. It ends the two-tier system between private and social landlords and ensures that all residents, regardless of tenure, benefit from the same safety standards and timelines.
By signing up, we’ve joined a national movement to:
- Remediate all 18m+ buildings in funded schemes by the end of 2029
- Ensure all 11m+ buildings are either remediated, scheduled, or subject to enforcement by the same deadline
- Access over £1 billion in new government funding without needing to prove financial hardship
- Adopt the new National Remediation System (NRS) for transparent tracking and reporting
- Embed resident engagement and support throughout the remediation journey.
Our commitment
Southern Housing is well placed to deliver on these commitments. We’ve already:
- Attended key government briefings and webinars to shape the plan’s development
- Developed a new delivery model and restructured the Building Safety Delivery team
- Shared insights with DLUHC on cost recovery, data usage, and resident experience to help shape national policy.
“Signing up to the joint plan is a natural step for us. We’ve been working hard to accelerate remediation and support our residents. This plan gives us the tools, funding, and shared ambition to go faster.” - Heather Langridge, Director of Building Safety.
What’s next?
We’ll be implementing our new delivery roadmap in the coming weeks, outlining how we’ll meet the plan’s milestones and support residents throughout. We’ll also continue to work closely with Homes England, the NHF, and our peers to share learning and drive sector-wide progress.
This is a pivotal moment for building safety, and we’re proud to be leading from the front.
