Safeguarding is more than a statutory duty - it’s a shared responsibility. This week is about raising awareness, challenging assumptions, and strengthening our commitment to protecting adults at risk. But safeguarding isn’t a one-week conversation. It’s an ongoing priority that demands action, understanding, and collaboration across sectors.
Changing the conversation
We need to shift perceptions and use language that’s inclusive, proactive, and empowering. Safeguarding isn’t just about responding to harm - it’s about prevention and creating environments where people feel safe and supported. Every organisation has a role to play, and that starts with leadership.
Leadership matters
Leaders set the tone for safeguarding culture. They shape values, behaviours, and accountability. At Southern Housing, this means embedding robust policies, promoting a “speak up” culture, and working in partnership to ensure continuous improvement.
Consent and engagement are key
Placing individuals at the centre of safeguarding decisions builds trust and respects autonomy. It leads to better outcomes and reinforces human rights. This person-centred approach is essential for effective safeguarding.
Our progress so far
One year on from investing in a dedicated Safeguarding Team, we’ve:
• Embedded a consistent policy and process for managing referrals
• Built strong foundations for best practice and compliance
• Developed systems to track cases and identify areas for improvement
• Strengthened partnerships and created a forward plan for continuous development.
Safeguarding is everyone’s business. By working together, we can create safer communities and protect those most at risk.
