Residents and staff of Bentham House, Southern Housing’s independent living scheme in Woolwich, gathered for a party to celebrate 10 years since the building opened its doors and welcomed its first residents.
During the event, held on Tuesday 15 July, guests were welcomed with live music and appetisers, kindly provided by Brighter Futures, a local initiative providing employment support for young adults with learning disabilities.
Guests heard speeches from the Deputy Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr David Gardner, Bentham House resident and secretary of the scheme’s tenants’ and residents’ association, David, and Southern Housing staff. More live music, a raffle and buffet lunch followed.

Charlotte Rooke, Southern Housing’s Head of Independent Living for London added: “I’m incredibly proud to mark this milestone for Bentham House. The scheme has been home to so many residents over the past decade, some of whom moved in at the very beginning and still live with us now. The team have worked with residents to build a community and the commitment of both has made this a genuinely lovely place to live - we’re excited to continue building on that legacy for years to come.
“It was a joy to bring everyone together to celebrate and we’d especially like to thank Berkeley Group, who generously sponsored the event.”

Speaking about living at the scheme, David said: “I’ve lived here since 2017 and I give thanks every day for my beautiful apartment, and for the security and support given by Southern Housing. I’m very grateful to all the staff for providing us with a safe, well maintained and clean environment for me and my fellow 200 residents to live as a community.
“I congratulate Southern Housing on Bentham House’s 10th anniversary - here's to the next 10 years.”
