The activities, funded by contractor Chas Berger, have proved a huge success bringing people together and helping to grow a stronger sense of community.
Football skills
The football sessions, which ran from January to March 2025, have grown from eight initial participants to 25 regular attendees.
Head coach, Kofi and assistant coach, Hardi, from Salaam Peace, provided weekly sessions alongside monthly inter-estate tournaments bringing together young people from across Hackney.
The programme has also offered coaching qualification pathways for participants to volunteer and develop their skills further.
I love working with young people, I've been doing it for a long time. It's always nice to see young people smiling and it's an opportunity for them to play in a nice environment, and for them to learn new skills to take away while they are with us. It's great to see young people take opportunities for volunteering and now they’re giving back to their community.
Cooking Programme
The 10-week cooking programme, which ended in June 2025, supported 16 young residents to build their confidence in the kitchen and learn healthy-eating habits.
Led by qualified chef Zish, participants prepared and shared two-course meals together.
The course has helped me to learn some great cooking skills and the importance of eating healthily. It's also made me feel more connected to my community and neighbourhood.
