Making a song and dance of it, residents at The Orangery Extra Care Scheme in Bexhill have been getting involved in a local project, designed to support people living with dementia.

The project, called Our Songs, Our Stories, involves weekly sessions focused on music themed activities. Residents can get involved with a range of instruments, sing along and even have a go at conducting, if they fancy it.

Founded on the evidence of the impact music can have on people living with dementia (and those who care for them), the six-week pilot project commissioned by East Sussex County Council group aims to;

• improve physical and mental health
• improve connections and relationships
• combat loneliness and isolation

The sessions clearly strike the right note with residents, as speaking of their involvement in the project, they said: “The group for me is a good distraction and I really enjoy it; I liked listening to the cello.” And “There was an African drum, I had one the same once. I loved attending the group, nice cake too!”
