Have a spooky and safe Halloween:
- Choose flame-resistant costumes whenever possible. If not, avoid trailing fabrics that could catch fire
- Teach children the “stop, drop, and roll” technique, it’s a lifesaving skill if clothes ever catch fire
- Use battery-powered tealights in pumpkins and decorations
- Keep decorations away from heat sources and open flames, including candles and heaters
- Keep exit routes and communal areas clear of decorations to allow safe evacuation, if needed
- Test your smoke alarms to make sure they’re working properly before the festivities begin
- Watch pets around open flames, curious noses and wagging tails can easily cause accidents.
Remember, remember… fireworks and bonfires can be dangerous
It’s safest to attend an organised display, but if you’re celebrating at home, follow these tips to stay safe:
- Only buy fireworks with the CE mark - use them one at a time and always read the instructions carefully
- Never return to a firework once it’s been lit
- Don’t carry fireworks in your pockets or throw them - they’re unpredictable and hazardous
- Build bonfires well away from buildings, sheds, fences, and hedges
- Keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby in case of emergencies
- Never use petrol or paraffin to start a fire
- Don’t leave bonfires unattended, always supervise until fully extinguished
- Extinguish fires completely and make the area safe before leaving
- Never light fires on balconies.
