As chair of the Proud network group, I'm pleased to announce we've signed up to the LGBT+ Housing Pledge. The pledge was, developed by HouseProud and Stonewall Housing, and is incredibly important, as it addresses ongoing issues faced by LGBT+ individuals in social housing.
By clearly stating our position and signing the pledge, we show our commitment to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment for all colleagues and residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The pledge:
- Specifically focuses on reducing hate crime and harassment, helping ensure residents feel safe and secure in their homes.
- Encourages housing providers to increase LGBT+ visibility through representation and to ensure LGBT+ residents have a meaningful voice in decision-making.
- Offers a clear framework for housing providers to demonstrate their commitment to LGBT+ equality and support.
Research shows many LGBT+ individuals experience hypervigilance and discomfort when repairs are carried out or when housing officers enter their homes. The pledge offers resources and support to housing providers, including training programs and materials to improve understanding of LGBT+ individuals and has the potential to drive meaningful change in the housing sector, making it a more inclusive and supportive environment for all LGBT+ residents.
