Over the years working at Southern Housing, I've been fortunate to have incredibly supportive and flexible managers, especially during Ramadan. Observing Ramadan while balancing work commitments can be challenging, but my managers have always shown great understanding and consideration.
They've accommodated adjustments where possible such as taking annual leave to accommodate shorter working weeks, allowing me to manage my fasting effectively. Whether it was offering flexibility with break times or ensuring I had the necessary support to maintain my wellbeing, their approach has made a significant difference. Their willingness to listen and adapt has not only made Ramadan more manageable but has also reinforced a strong sense of inclusion and respect in the workplace.
As a manager myself, I carry forward this same approach with my own team members who observe fasting. I understand everyone experiences Ramadan differently, so I always try to make reasonable adjustments where possible, taking the business needs into consideration. This includes allowing flexible working, ensuring those fasting take breaks during their day for wellbeing purposes and being mindful of energy levels, especially during longer shifts. For example, I've accommodated earlier start times for colleagues who prefer to finish work early to allow sufficient time to prepare iftar and adjusted break schedules to where needed.
I truly appreciate the support I've received, and I take pride in fostering the same inclusive and understanding environment for my team. It’s a testament to the positive culture at Southern Housing, where colleagues are valued and respected for their individual needs.
Personally, I have a passion for cooking and love experimenting with recipes from different cultures. This Ramadan, I look forward to sharing some of my favourite recipes with colleagues who may want to try them.
Ramadan is a time of reflection, community, and spiritual growth. Understanding and supporting those who are fasting can make a meaningful difference in fostering an inclusive and respectful workplace.
With Ramadan approaching soon, here are a few ways to support fasting friends and colleagues:
- Have open conversations: Check in with fasting friends and colleagues and ask how you can support them during this period.
- Flexible working options: Where possible, managers could offer flexibility in work hours, taking into account the business needs and the nature of the role.
- Annual leave considerations: The ability to take annual leave or adjust leave dates at short notice is extremely helpful, especially since the date of Eid is confirmed only the night before.
- Prayer breaks: Allowing time for prayer during the day can be beneficial for those observing Ramadan.
