FAQs
Now the initial investigations into Eastgate have been completed, we’ve moved onto the next phase of the project. We instructed a structural engineer to consider the results of the testing undertaken so far. We asked them to review the access management plan.
Their interim view is that no person should be permitted entry to the building until a more detailed structural analysis has been conducted. The current access management plan for Eastgate has been suspended to reflect this approach.
This means that you're currently not able to access your flat. This includes retrieving any possessions that remain in the building.
As soon as we know if access can be managed safely, we’ll update you with a revised access management plan. We’ll support you in any way we can whilst access is temporarily paused.
To answer your queries, you'll find a detailed FAQ below.
The long-term future of Eastgate is yet to be decided. The issues are complex and require further assessments undertaken by competent experts and advisors. This work is on-going and will take time, which is why we took the decision to prioritise providing you with offers to enable you to move into a permanent new home.
We have moved to the next phase of the project and have commissioned a structural engineer who is experienced in this area and will best support the project.
It is vital we act on the advice of our experts. This is a temporary measure to let our engineers finalise their assessment, taking into account all the latest testing results and finish their assessment.
We don’t know at this stage. But we will keep you updated based on the advice we receive from our structural engineers.
The Prohibition Order issued by Woking Borough Council also applies to the shops.
The freeholder for the building is responsible for the management of access to the commercial premises. Whilst Southern Housing are not responsible for these units, we have notified the freeholder and Woking Borough Council.
All will depend on the outcome of the current assessment by our engineers, we'll update you as soon as we have the information.
We are aware that some of our residents still have possessions in the flats, others have already removed their possessions. We hope the outcome of the engineering review will allow residents to retrieve their possessions with a new management plan in place, but it is too early to confirm this. This will be informed by the ongoing structural engineering review.
Yes absolutely, we want to make sure you can move on with your lives as quickly as possible.
Yes, it can proceed. However, as part of your buy back you are expected to remove all your belongings from the property. If you have already done this, and we know many have, then there will be no effect on your buy back. Even if there are still items you wish to remove, your buy back can still go ahead, and we’ll aim to arrange a future date when you can remove your belongings. If you already have solicitors working for you on your buy back, they should be able to advise you about this and seek further reassurance from our lawyers.
All of the valuations have been carried out on the assumption that the block is in good structural condition and flats are readily saleable. So, there will be no change to the valuations used for the buy backs in light of this new information.
