Last year, concerns were raised about anti-social behaviour (ASB) and a lack of local opportunities for young people at Fieldgate Mansions. Since then, we’ve been working alongside residents and local partners to take practical steps forward.
Keeping kids entertained
One of the biggest priorities was creating more to do for our younger residents.
We worked closely with residents to understand what families wanted. It quickly became clear there was strong interest in holiday activities for primary school-aged children.
By linking up with local partners, including the council and Fresh Visions, and seeking out funding opportunities, we’ve been able to support:
- A summer activity programme running several days a week
- Free sessions for around 30 children and young people
- Hot meals, day trips and a community fun day as part of the offer.
We also welcomed over 100 young people to a youth event in June, with a barbecue, activities and information about local youth clubs. This helped families find out what’s already available nearby and how to get involved.
These are early steps, but they’re already helping more young people stay active, meet others and feel part of their community.
Greener shared spaces
Residents also told us they wanted to make better use of the estate’s outdoor areas.
With support from Davinia Allen, our Local Link, we’ve secured gardening vouchers to help bring planting back into the main courtyard. To get this up and running, we’re working with a local partner, Family Action, ensuring it reflects what people want to see and helps create a space everyone can enjoy.
What’s changed so far
It’s still early days, but there are signs of progress:
- More activities for young people over the summer
- Increased awareness of local youth clubs and services
- Early signs of reduced ASB
- Plans in place for greener, more welcoming shared spaces.
These changes have come from residents speaking up and getting involved. Their ideas and energy have shaped the progress and we’re looking forward to building on that in the months ahead.
"Having this youth club has helped me as a parent. The children enjoy and look forward to all the activities, they're looking forward to the trips and the hot lunches which are provided. The club keeps them occupied, leaving me with all the time I need for myself."
