Wildfire risk during heatwaves
We all enjoy the summer sunshine, but heatwaves bring a high risk of wildfires. The video below shows photos from one such fire that destroyed many Southern Housing homes in Dagenham, East London.
Dry conditions mean fires spread quickly, so it’s vital to be prepared:
- Clear dry grass, dead leaves, and rubbish - especially near buildings and in gutters
- Keep lawns cut short (under 7cm) and trim overgrown plants
- Dispose of garden waste safely
- Keep sheds and furniture away from your home
- Water your garden regularly. During hosepipe bans, use a water butt
- Never discard cigarettes or smoking materials on the ground and ensure they’re fully extinguished
- Make sure your house number or name is easy to spot in an emergency
- Speak to neighbours about overgrown land and contact Southern Housing, or your local authority, if needed.
Taking simple steps now can make a big difference during hot, dry weather.

When using a BBQ safely in a garden:
- Follow the instructions and check for damage before use
- Use on level, non-combustible ground, away from trees, fences, and buildings
- Never use petrol, paraffin, or flammable liquids
- Keep children and pets well clear
- Never leave it unattended
- Keep water or sand nearby for emergencies
- Let disposable BBQs cool fully before responsible disposal
- Ensure good ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning - watch for symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, or breathlessness.
