It hasn’t escaped me that these days, staying in can cost just as much as going out.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know the rising cost of living has turned life’s simple pleasures into luxuries. Add to that the mental health and loneliness epidemics, and it’s clear: many of us need a free or low-cost dose of nature and connection.

Getting out with the kids this summer without spending a fortune can feel like mission impossible. As a single household, I’ve had to get creative to find budget-friendly fun.

The good news? Joy is often waiting just outside our front doors - and it doesn’t have to cost a thing.

Here are some of my go-to low-cost, family-friendly ideas for a summer well spent:

With a bit of planning and a splash of curiosity, this summer can be joyful, memorable and money-smart.

British summer weather can be a character of its own - always dress wisely and don’t skip the sunscreen!

Pack a snack and take a stroll. Watch the boats, spot wildlife, and soak up the peace. Feeling energetic? Grab your helmets and go for a family bike ride.

Local nature reserves are full of summer magic. Think frog spotting, bird watching, and wild exploring - perfect for curious little minds.

Great for tweens and teens. Try the outdoor fitness equipment or make your own fun with races, skipping games, or good old British bulldog.

Lots of parks offer free or low-cost access. Early mornings are usually quiet - perfect for a family knockabout.

Dig out those skates and head to smooth paths or skate parks. Many sports centres also run affordable skate sessions with music.

Packed with free holiday activities, story times, and books. Check the noticeboard or have a quiet word with your local librarian for more hidden gems.

Every September volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's your chance to see hidden places and try new experiences – all of which are free!
